Maersk chief warns that EU’s antitrust policy ‘benefits China and the US’

Soren Skou, head of Maersk, has stuck his neck out, and warned the European Commission that its competition rules prevent the region from competing with the US and China. “Is it really a good idea that we don’t allow the creation of a European global champion?” he told Danish media. Mr Skou is a...

All change at the top as Ceva Logistics enters phase two of restructure

Ceva Logistics is in its “second phase of development”, a year after its takeover by CMA CGM, which will include a change of chief executive.
The aim is “a return to profitability” for the forwarder, with a new business plan that includes developing new products, building on the network in Africa and South-east Asia, digitalisation and further investment in IT, particularly in freight management.
But there is also a slew of management …

Cargobase offers shippers performance ratings for their service providers

Cargobase is to provide shippers with performance ratings of their logistics providers, one of three new initiatives this year.
The Cargobase platform, which enables “enterprise” shippers to find logistics providers, now has the ability to provide ratings, scored from one to five and based on four categories: pricing, timing, communication and overall performance. The ratings, by shippers, can be given once a shipment has reached its destination.
“A shipper can now get …

On the wires: Geodis smells good – time for SNCF to make the smart choice

“SNCF’s objective to attain a break-even position by 2022 has been dealt a severe blow by a prolonged strike that could hasten a disposal  of assets at France’s state railway, including the partial sale of its freight transport and logistics arm Geodis.” –  Lloyd’s Loading List (LLL) , 14 January 2020.
Whether external or internal events are to blame for the financial distress experienced by state-owned rail company SNCF Mobilités, what is …

Market Insight: Damco – the end is nigh?

Ever since mid-December, when another not-so surprising layoff announcement concerning AP Møller-Mærsk (APMM) included the departure of  “Klaus, the former Damco head”, as one source highlighted then, a few other market veterans were only vaguely interested in sharing their views on the latest APMM affairs.
With hindsight, that single resounding comment, might be a sign of more big bad things to come for APMM’s asset-light freight forwarding unit or, rather, for …

2020 will be a better year for investment in maritime and logistics start-ups

Venture capital investment in the maritime sector was dominated last year by the enormous $1bn raised by US digital-first freight forwarder Flexport, but the deal masked an overall decline in investment in maritime start-ups.
According to new research from consultancy Thetius, $1.14bn was raised by start-ups last year, but without the Flexport $1bn, led by Japanese investor SoftBank, the remaining $144m represented a 24% decline on the $190m raised in 2018.
Thetius …

Time running out to apply for UK Brexit training grants

UK freight forwarders have until the end of this week to apply for government funds to train staff and make IT improvements as they prepare for increased levels of post-Brexit customs activities.
In October, the government announced it was making £16m available “for customs intermediaries, traders and hauliers that make customs declarations to help them prepare ahead of Brexit”.
Robert Keen (pictured above), director general of BIFA, the trade association for UK …

Supply chain radar: Kuehne + Nagel, defying price estimates, needs a ‘catalyst’

Kuehne + Nagel (K+N) is still living off the stock market rally seen when it reported its third-quarter (Q3) numbers on 22 October. Back then its shares swiftly flew past the key Sfr160 handle, staying above that threshold until now.
Its trailing figures were good indeed, rather than outstanding, though.
Now look at this
“As of last trade Kuehne und Nagel International AG (KNIN:VTX) traded at 164.55, -0.87% below its 52-week high of 166.00, set on Jan …
