Against the odds: AP Møller-Maersk – put logistics on the magic block

Transparency, what a wonderful thing that is – AP Møller-Maersk Group (APMM) surely knows that.

A reminder needed?
To slap the critics (getting thinner on the ground), who often complain about a paucity of details concerning its strategy in logistics and the total lack of apparent care for supply chain neutrality, there is more APMM can do while delivering value to its shareholders.
As we near Stay Ahead 3.0 – the transformational options I …

Medical-related products have seen air cargo prices soar, despite prices as shown by the TAC Index continuing to oscillate around the ‘new normal’ levels, with the highest rate this week from Shanghai to North America at $7.73 per kilo.
But according to the World Health Organisation, carriers are charging “outrageous” prices to fly dry ice and other medical equipment.
Paul Molinaro, WHO chief of operations support and logistics, told Reuters that he …

FMC investigates possible law-breaking by carriers as agricultural exports suffer

The US Federal Maritime Commission (FMC) is renewing its focus on container availability levels for the country’s agricultural exporters.
Speaking yesterday at the Global Maritime Conference, FMC chairman Michael Khouri said the organisation was looking into whether reports that some carriers are refusing to allow empty containers into the US hinterland, preferring to send them directly back to Asia.
“Some ocean carriers – not all – have stated that they will no …

China-Vietnam sourcing shift enters phase two, bringing more box congestion

The manufacturing shift from China to Vietnam is moving up a gear, putting pressure on the country’s container supply chains.
With 2.4% GDP growth forecast by the IMF, Vietnam is on track to become one of the fastest growing economies in the world in 2020, as many others fall into lockdown-induced recessions.
For example, Singapore and Malaysia look set to suffer deep economic slumps, which would see Vietnam overtake the pair to …

Neglected: ageing mid-sized box ship fleet in ‘acute need of renewal’

The ageing fleet of small to medium-sized containerships needs replacing but carriers and non-operating owners have neglected to invest in these crucial workhorse vessels, according to Alphaliner.
“Over the past years, carriers have primarily placed orders for very large and ultra-large containerships,” said the consultant, noting that both the shipping lines and NOOs had “neglected the medium sized sector from 4,000-9,000 teu”.
A carrier contact admitted to The Loadstar recently that it …

CMA CGM has reassured North European shippers and forwarders it will inject new equipment and vessel capacity on its Asia-Europe services in an effort to clear the mounting backlog of unshipped cargo.

MSC buys more second-hand ships and may be eyeing Seaspan newbuilds

The world’s largest non-operating containership owner, Seaspan Corporation, has ordered five newbuild 12,200 teu vessels, backed by 18-year charters with a major ocean carrier.
“All five vessels will commence long-term charters with a leading global liner company and are subject to vessel purchase obligations at the conclusion of the charters,” said Seaspan.
But it gave no details of the charterer, other than that it is a “long-standing customer”, or the construction yard.
“Executing …
