‘The shambles that is Felixstowe port is costing everyone time and money’

The UK’s biggest container port at Felixstowe (POF) is buckling under the strain of a “sharp spike in import volumes”, triggering hauliers and forwarders to criticise the management’s “contemptuous attitude” towards them.
“It is a complete s**t show and, if we as hauliers treated our customers with the same distain as the POF treats hauliers, we would be out of business by the end of the month,” said haulier David Perfect.
Hauliers …

Importers ‘close to breaking point’ as tension rises at Sydney’s Port Botany

Other strike-hit container terminal operators and supply chain players are backing a DP World Australia bid to end the “crippling” industrial action at Sydney’s Port Botany.
Work stoppages by the Maritime Union of Australia (MUA) have caused an 11-day cargo backlog at the port, with a knock-on effect of container supply chain congestion spreading to Melbourne and Brisbane as vessels are diverted.
On Tuesday, DP World lodged an application with the Fair …

Hutchison pays ‘Failing’ Grayling £100,000 for seven hours’ work a week

There is one very important question about Chris Grayling’s Hutchison £100,000 a year wage packet for seven hours’ work a week: does it include holiday pay?
We’re talking serious numbers here – if Hutchison Ports expects Mr Grayling to work all 52 weeks of the year, that amounts to £274.73 per hour; but if, like the rest of us, he gets the standard four weeks’ paid annual leave, it works out …

Analysis: the rollercoaster ride of the charter market in 2020

Containership time-charter markets have, with few exceptions, experienced a rollercoaster ride since the start of 2020.
After a generally weak start to the year for feeder vessels and a continuation of 2019’s strong markets for mid-size and larger units, the onset of lockdowns drove a correction in vessel earnings.
Since then, however, time-charter markets have roared back into life, and vessel earnings for key benchmarks have risen at least as fast, if …

Container availability drops across Asia prior to shipping peak

New blog from container tracking and exchange platform ContainerXchange, with some data to illuminate recent reports of growing equipment shortages in Asia.
