The Yemeni government has expressed gratitude to Saudi Arabia for its additional 8-million-U.S. dollar assistance in the salvage operations of the Safer tanker abandoned off Yemen’s western coast, reports the Siasat Daily.

Stricter COVID-19 Safety Protocols for Capsized Vessel Removal

  • Workers coming to the Georgia coast to cut apart and remove a giant cargo ship that overturned a year ago will be sequestered at a nearby resort.
  • September 8 marked one year since the South Korean freighter Golden Ray capsized Sept. 8, 2019, after leaving the Port of Brunswick.

Floating pipe barrier segment placed around Golden Ray

The first high-density polyethylene (HDPE) floating pipe barrier segment has been placed around the wreck of the Golden Ray.

The HDPE pipe will float on the water surface between steel buoys constrained by the structural framing at each pile group.

It will also secure and protect a floating offshore oil boom which will be installed outside of the pipe, surrounding the wreck site.

Containers placed around Golden Ray to reduce tidal effects

Contractors have begun placing containers around the car carrier Golden Ray, six months after the ship grounded off St. Simons Island, Georgia, in an effort to reduce tidal flow effects during salvage operations.

Weeks marine workers placed the first shipping container near the grounded vessel on Thursday, March 12.

Crews will soon place multiple containers in arcs around the bow and stern of Golden Ray to reduce tidal effects.

Lawsuit filed regarding Golden Ray’s wreck removal operation

Attorneys for salvors Donjon-SMIT filed a lawsuit against the USCG last week, aiming to stop salvage operations that are currently underway for the capsized car carrier Golden Ray. The lawsuit relates to USCG’s decision to allow the vessel owner to tender for third-party contractors who were not part of the approved response plan, to dismantle the ship on fixed-price instead of cost-plus terms.

Environmental protection barrier to be deployed for Golden Ray

The Unified Command (UC) for the St. Simons Sound Incident Response and assisting organizations are collaborating in finalizing plans for the construction of an environmental protection barrier (EPB) to be built around ‘Golden Ray’.

Fire started on Golden Ray wreck during welding operations

Fire broke out on the wreck of the ro-ro Golden Ray in St. Simons Sound on January 19. When the fire started contractors were contacting welding operations inside the ship.

Luckily, the fire was contained within the hull and was quickly put out by the contractor’s fireboat.
