COLUMN | The Twelve Days of Christmas 2023, final edition: ten spot anchor handlers; eleven foreign vessels for Hornbeck Offshore, and the new twelve labours of Hercules Supply in China [Offshore Accounts]

Merry Christmas! On the twelfth day of Christmas my true love gave to me… twelve drummers drumming, eleven pipers piping, ten lords a-leaping and so on, all the way back to that partridge in a pear tree from day one of the old festive carol. But not here, as, for the fourth year in a […]

Shipyards get financial breathing room from military contracts

For duly certified shipbuilders, a military contract provides a lifeline when clients in other industries are in free fall. Just ask the principals of the shipyards division of Houston-based Gulf Island Fabrication Inc.

The Navy exercised options that awarded the company’s Houma, La.-based Gulf Island Shipyards LLC a two-year, $129.9-million contract this spring to build two additional Navajo-class (T-ATS) towing, salvage and rescue vessels. The new contract swelled the company’s backlog to an...

Shipyards in operation during pandemic

Shipyards across the U.S. remain open for business in spite of the coronavirus pandemic. While these companies respect the virus’s propensity to create havoc and death and spread like a prairie fire, boats have to be built and delivered. The key is working smart.

“We are open for business but being very diligent as we look out for the safety of our employees,” said Chris Vaccari, executive vice president, Gulf Island Shipyards, Houma, La. “To date we have no reported cases of Covid 19. We are...

Strong economy equals good year for passenger vessels

In late 2019, Portland Spirit Cruises & Events was on track to have either its best year in 25 years or its second best. And sales for 2020 “are off to an excellent start,” Dan Yates, president of the Oregon dining and sightseeing cruise company, said late last year.

Even though the region is trade dependent on the Pacific Rim, the economy is holding up well. Unemployment and interest rates are low. Both the corporate and public sides of the business have been strong. His biggest challenge — and...

Military contracts help keep shipyards in operation

Shipyards that sign military contracts to build for Uncle Sam’s Navy, Coast Guard and even the Army and Air Force usually have a financial leg up over those that don’t. Many such contracts run into the millions of dollars, some into billions of dollars.

The government doesn’t just give these contracts away, however. Shipyards, building in steel or aluminum, have to learn how to deal with the military construction guidelines laid out by the government.

“If you can’t perform on a military contract...
